Tokai Lions’ “Bag a Burger” Project was started over nine years ago. It was started with a view to teaching children from the community about looking after their own environment, and the impact of rubbish and litter on their own community. Each “Bag a Burger” we aim to have 100 children from a particular community and we split them into groups. Every child is given a rubbish bag, and gloves. The children are taken around the streets of their community and fill their rubbish bags. In exchange for their full bag of rubbish, the children each get a burger, juice and fruit. We then do an environmental talk. Tokai Lions have held “Bag a Burger” events in Lavender Hill, Vrygrond, Westlake, and CAFDA Village.
The April 2023 Bag a Burger was held in Westlake, where we collaborated with Westlake Primary School, The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa, and Westlake United Church Trust. Together with 50 children from Westlake Primary, the roads and streams in the community were cleaned, and each child got a tasty burger and fruit and juice.
